The AMC Gremlin was a series of subcompact economy cars introduced for the 1971 model year. The Gremlin was built on a shortened Hornet platform, and was offered as a two door hatchback. AMC produced the Gremlin in one generation, but the model received constant yearly updates. A range of inline six engines, as well as a few V8 units were available on the Gremlin. The most notable Gremlin variant was the 401-XR, a rare dealer built 6.6L V8 powered version. Production of the AMC Gremlin lasted until 1978, when it was replaced by the AMC Spirit.
