The Bentley Continentals originally were some special chassis Bentley R-Type and Bentley S1, S2 or S3s that featured stronger frames and more powerful engines destined for comfort, high-speed, long-distance travel. The Continental name was used only until 1965 as a variant, and in 1984 Rolls-Royce launched the Bentley Continental Convertible, a Bentley variant of the Rolls-Royce Corniche made between 1984 and 1995. Nonetheless, the Bentley Continental name lived on as a new car, when in 1990 Rolls-Royce decided to develop a series of luxury coupes sold as the Continental R, the Continental S (limited edition, high performance variant) and the Continental T (short wheelbase variant), which were the first Bentley cars to be produced that were not based on a Rolls Royce car since 1965.
