The second generation of BMW 1 Series, known as the F20, was introduced for the 2012 model year. The F20 was only offered in two hatchback body styles (F20 3 Door and F21 5 Door) as BMW moved the convertible and coupe from the E8x 1 Series into the BMW 2 Series. These hatchbacks were not available in the North American market. The F20 generation of 1 Series was powered by a range of inline three, inline four, and inline six engines, available in both gasoline and diesel versions. Notable variants included the 125i, M135i and M140i. Production of the F20 BMW 1 Series ended in 2019, when it was replaced by the F40 BMW 1 Series.
