Chevrolet introduced the Chevelle family of cars in 1964. The Chevelle was an aggressive plan for Chevy. As 55-57 Chevrolet “Shoe box” offered many models and variations, the Chevelle platform would now do the heavy lifting. Chevelle had entry level “300” models that were available in a 2 door post, 4 door sedan or Wagon. Chevelle also marked the return of the El Camino, and a sequel to the Nomad in a 2-door wagon, as well as the family friendly 4 door Malibu Wagon, or 4 door sedans and the sporty 4 door hardtop. That was just the beginning though, Chevelle also took a big step forward for muscle car enthusiasts offering both 2 door hardtop, and convertible “Malibu” models and when optioned with a small block Chevy V8 these full frame cars really moved. The “Super Sport” option initially offered as a trim for 64-65 as the "Malibu SS" became the "SS-396" and was a model unto itself starting in 1966 with big block power ranging from 325hp all the way up to 375hp. The Chevelle SS would continue from 68-72 with new models and options.
