Ford introduced the fourth generation Fairlane for the 1962 model year. The fourth generation Fairlane saw the model downsize into the intermediate category. These new smaller cars were available in hardtop, sedan, and station wagon (Ranch Wagon) body styles, and were powered by a range of inline six and V8 engines. The base (Fairlane) and premium (Fairlane 500) trim levels continued for the fourth generation, with the addition of the 'Sports Coupe' trim. For 1964, Ford built a limited, high performance drag racing Fairlane variant known as the Thunderbolt. The fourth generation Fairlane was in production until 1965, when it was replaced by the Fifth Generation Fairlane.
