The third generation of Ford Galaxie was introduced for the 1965 model year. The third generation Galaxie was offered in three trim levels, Galaxie 500 (base), Galaxie 500 XL (intermediate), and Galaxie 500 LTD (premium), and was built in four main body styles: two door hardtop, four door hardtop, four door sedan, and two door convertible. The standard engine was a 3.9L inline six, while a range of optional V8 engines were available. Over the course of production, the 500 XL was renamed simply 'XL', while the 500 LTD became its own model, the Ford LTD. Production of the third generation Galaxie ended in 1968, with the debut of the Fourth Generation Ford Galaxie.
