The GT500 had its final evolution as part of the 1969-1970 Ford Shelby Mustang. By the time the 1969 GT500 was introduced, Carroll Shelby's involvement with the Shelby Mustang was nearing its end. Shelby had very little direct involvement in these cars, and they were longer and heavier than any of its predecessors. Offered in a fastback coupe (Sportsroof) or convertible body style, these cars were powered by a 335hp Cobra Jet 428 (7.0L) V8 engine that sent drive to the rear wheels to the rear wheels through a 4 speed manual or "Cruise-o-Matic" 3 speed automatic transmission. Although the GT500 was offered for the 1969 and 1970 model years, all cars sold in 1970 were actually manufactured in 1969, and were VINed as 1970 cars under federal supervision. The GT500 was discontinued after 1970, and it wouldn't be until 2005 that Shelby and Ford would rekindle their partnership and introduce the Second Generation Ford Shelby Mustang.
