The third and final evolution of the First Generation Ford Shelby Mustang was offered for the 1969 and 1970 model years. Offered in both fastback (Sportsroof) and convertible body styles, these cars were built in three variants, the GT350, GT350H, and GT500. This final evolution of the 1st Gen Shelby Mustang had very little direct input from Carroll Shelby himself, as Ford had taken over all major decisions. In fact, Shelby terminated his agreement with Ford in the summer of 1969. Much larger and heavier than previous Shelby Mustangs, these cars featured a less sporting character than their predecessors. Notably, for 1970, there was no production of the Shelby Mustang, but instead, unsold 1969 cars were given 1970-year VINs under supervision of the FBI, with these vehicles being the last 1st Gen Shelby Mustangs offered. The Shelby Mustang would remain out of production until 2005, when Shelby and Ford restarted their partnership with the Second Generation Ford Shelby Mustang.
