The Jeep Wagoneer is one of the first SUVs introduced for the 1963 model year. The base model, Wagoneer (SJ), was created to be the top-of-the-line, four-wheel-drive model for the Jeep. It was available in two or four doors with a front-mounted engine. The Kaiser Jeep Corporation designed the Wagoneer to be a replacement for the Willys Wagon. First offered with a 3.8L straight-six overhead cam motor and independent suspension, the 4x4 was ahead of its time. Several V8 options were available from AMC and even Buick. Transmission options varied from a three or four-speed manual to a three-speed TH400 automatic. AMC created a full-time-four-wheel drive system called Quadra-Trac and Selec-Trac, which allowed customers to decide how many wheels were engaged from the cabin. The first generation of Wagoneers (SJ) ended in 1983 when AMC changed the chassis style to a unibody calling it the Grand Wagoneer.
