Mazda RX-7 - FD - 3rd Gen (1992 to 2003)

The 3rd generation Mazda RX-7, identified by chassis code FD, was produced between 1992 and 2002, although it was only available in the US from 1993 through 1995. This generation was a departure for the model, as it was only offered with a twin-turbocharged engine. The '13B' 1.3L Wankel rotary engine was fitted with twin turbos and now produced 255hp, and yet the car was lighter (though slightly wider) than the previous FC generation. Transmissions offered include a standard 5-speed manual and a four-speed automatic, although the latter had smaller production numbers. Variants for the US market include the Base Model, the Touring version, which later evolved into the PEG package, and the performance focused variants known as the RX-7 R1 and R2. For the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM), notable variants include the Type R Bathurst, and the RX-7 Spirit R, produced for the final year in 2002 (registered into 2003). Samples with substantial body or engine modifications can be found in the RX-7 FD Custom market. The 3rd generation RX-7 was the last for the model with no direct replacement, although the Mazda RX-8 is often seen as a spiritual successor.
