The third generation of Mercedes-Benz CL, the C216 was introduced for 2007. Like its predecessor, the C216 was a coupe based on the S-Class, and was offered in variants such as the CL500, CL550, CL550 4MATIC, CL600, CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY, CL 550 BlueEFFICIENCY 4MATIC, CL63 AMG, and the CL65 AMG. In 2014, Mercedes discontinued the use of the CL name, choosing to name these grand tourers S-Class Coupes, starting with the C217 S-Class Coupe.
