The second generation of Mercury Comet was introduced for the 1964 model year. The second generation Comet was offered as coupe, sedan, convertible, or station wagon, and featured Caliente, 404, and 202 trim levels, with Caliente trim representing the top of the range. The second generation Comet also saw the introduction of the Mercury Cyclone, which began life as a performance package for the Comet, but became its own model. This latest generation of Comet was fitted with a range of inline six and V8 options, with the 4.7L V8 featured for the Cyclone being the top offering. Production of the second generation Mercury Comet ended in 1965, when the Third Generation Mercury Comet was unveiled.
