The Second Generation of Renault Clio, known as the Clio II, was introduced in mid-1998 for the 1999 model year. The Clio II was built as a two or four door hatchback or as a four door station wagon (estate). Almost all Clio II variants were fitted with a gasoline or diesel inline four engine, with manual or automatic gearbox options sending power to the front wheels. The notable exception was the V6 Renault Sport, a unique performance-focused variant that featured a mid-mounted V6 engine that drove the rear wheels. Although not as extreme as the V6 Renault Sport, the Clio II also saw the introduction of the sporty Clio RS, a variant that would become a staple of Clio for future generations. Three main evolutions of the Clio II were made: Phase 1 (Aug 1998 - Aug 2001), Phase 2 (Aug 2001 - Aug 2003), and Phase 3 (Aug 2003 - Aug 2005). The Renault Clio II was in standard production until late 2005, when its relplacement, the Clio III debuted. Even though its replacement had already been introduced, the Clio II was built until 2012 under the names Clio Campus and Clio Symbol.
