With the introduction of the Ford 289 cu. in. V8 engine, the Shelby Cobra moved into its second evolution, known as the Mk2. The first 289 Cobra, VIN CSX2076, featured many changes to improve the model. These changes not only included the larger, more powerful engine, but also wider wheel arches, side vents, and a wider grill in order to improve cooling. The boot lid was shortened to increase rigidity, and a new method of fastening the hood was implemented. 455 road going examples of the 289 were produced, all within the CSX2xxx VIN designation.
