Volkswagen introduced the Type 2 in 1950. The first generation of the Type 2 is known as the T1. Based on the Type 1 Beetle, these early Type 2 vehicles featured the now classic design with the sloping trim lines and large chrome VW emblem on the front. The T1 Type 2 was offered in a variety of body styles and variants, including pickup trucks, panel vans, and camping vehicles, all of which featued a rear mounted engine. The most notable variants of the T1 Type 2 were the Single Cab pick up, Double Cab Pick Up, Microbus, Panel Van, Samba and the Westfalia. While European production of the T1 ended in 1967, production continued until 1975 in Brazil. The T1 was replaced by the T2 Type 2.
