The Volvo 200 Series was introduced for the 1975 model year. The Volvo 200 Series was available in three body styles, each with its corresponding number in its badging (2 for coupe, 4 for sedan, 5 for station wagon), as well as engine cylinders (4 or 6). An example would be a 1977 Volvo 245, where the car named is a four cylinder station wagon. After the numbering system, Volvo included trim level letters to differentiate variants, such as DL and GL. This naming system was used until 1985, when examples were only known as 240 or 260, with body style numbers no longer being used. The main variants built included the 242, 244, 245, and 264. Although for the most part, the 240 and 260 were available with four and six cylinder engines respectively, 240 diesel variants were occasionally fitted with a six cylinder engine. Volvo's 262C luxury coupe was based on the 200 Series, and featured a Bertone built body. While production of the Volvo 260 ended in 1985, the Volvo 240 continued to be built until 1993.
