Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works) was founded in 1916. Commonly known as BMW, the company began life as an airplane engine manufacturer that began building motorcycles in 1923. BMW eventually entered the automotive world in 1928, and has gone on to become one of the world&#39;s most recognized and respected automotive manufacturers. BMW introduced the 6 Series in 1976. A series of grand tourers, the BMW 6 Series has been produced in four generations: the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/">E24 (1977-1989)</a>, the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e63/">E63 (2004-2010)</a>, the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/f12/">F12 (2011-2018)</a>, and the G32 (2018-2021). The first three generations of 6 Series featured various body styles, yet were always released first as coupes. However, starting with the G32, BMW has shifted the 6 Series into a series of 5 door Gran Coupes not available in North America.

The first generation of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/">BMW 6 Series</a> was introduced for the 1977 model year. Known as the E24, the first generation 6 Series was a range of two door coupes available with a variety of BMW straight six engines. The E24 enjoyed success as a race car as well, helping to increase the car&#39;s profile. Variants of the E24 include the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/628csi/">628CSi</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/630csi/">630CSi</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/633csi/">633CSi</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/635csi/">635CSi</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/l6/">L6</a>, and the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/m635csi/">M635CSi</a> / <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/m6/">M6</a>. Introduced for the 1979 model year, the 635CSi was a variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/">E24 BMW 6 Series</a>. Initially, the 635CSi was powered by BMW&#39;s 215hp M90 inline six engine, but from the 1983 model year, BMW&#39;s M30 engine was used. At first, the 182hp M30B34 3.4L inline six was fitted, but from 1988, the larger and more powerful 208hp M30B35 3.5L inline six was used. All engines used on the 635CSi sent power to the rear wheels via manual or automatic transmission options. Production of the BMW 635CSi ended in 1989.

The BMW 630CSi was a variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/">E24 6 Series</a> that was introduced for the 1977 model year. Only available in North America, the 630CSi was powered by BMW&#39;s M30B30 engine. This 3.0L inline six unit generated 176hp, which it sent to the rear wheels via a 3 speed automatic, or 4 speed manual transmission. The 630CSi had a limited production run, being offered exclusively for the 1977 model year before BMW replaced it with the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/633csi/">633CSi</a>.

BMW introduced their 633CSi variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/">E24 6 Series</a> for the 1978 model year. The 633CSi replaced the BMW 630CSi, and was powered by BMW&#39;s M30B32 engine. This 3.2L inline six was the only engine used for the 633CSi, but depending on tuning, its power ranged from 174hp to 197hp. European spec versions featured more power than North American variants due to different fuel injection and catalytic converters. These differences were due to US emissions regulations. Regardless of the engine&#39;s power, the 633CSi sent its power through manual and automatic transmission options to its rear wheels. Production of the BMW 633CSi lasted until 1984.

The first generation of a BMW Motorsport tuned 6 Series, this new model was known as the M635CSi in most parts of the world, yet in Japan and North America, the model was dubbed the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/m6/">M6</a>, which featured a less powerful engine. M635CSi models were fitted with the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/m1/">M1</a> derived M88/3 282hp engine. Visual changes for the the M635CSi included a larger front air dam, a lip spoiler on the trunk, and special BBS wheels.

The first generation of a BMW Motorsport tuned 6 Series, this new model was known as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/m635csi/">M635CSi</a> in most parts of the world, yet in Japan and North America, the model was dubbed the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/m6/">M6</a>. M6 models were fitted with the detuned BMW&nbsp;S38B35 straight six engine, down to 256hp due to the addition of catalytic converters. The BMW L6 was a luxury variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/">BMW E24 6 Series</a> that was introduced for the 1987 model year. The L6 was largely a more well-appointed version of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/6-series/e24/635csi/">635CSi</a>, featuring the same 182hp M30B34 inline six engine, although it was only available with a 4 speed automatic transmission. Among other changes the L6 featured was a leather headliner and additional trim. The BMW L6 was only offered for the 1987 model year in the North American market.
