The original 8 Series, known as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/e31/">E31</a>, was introduced for the 1991 model year and built until 1999. The series name was then dormant until 2018, when BMW reintroduced the 8 Series. The second generation 8 Series is known as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/g15/">G15</a>. BMW introduced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/">8 Series</a> for the 1991 model year. The first generation of 8 Series is known as the E31. This new series of cars were luxury grand tourers, offered with V8 or V12 engine options. A total of four variants were offered, the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/e31/840ci/">840Ci</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/e31/850i/">850i</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/e31/850ci/">850Ci</a> and the top of the range <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/e31/850csi/">850CSi</a>. The E31 was built until 1999, when BMW decided to stop production and shelve the 8 Series. In 2018, BMW revived the name with the second generation 8 Series, the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/g15/">G15</a>.

Introduced for the 1993 model year, the 840Ci was a variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/e31/">E31 BMW 8 Series</a>. The 840Ci was the E31 8 Series&#39; lowest priced offering, and was powered by a V8 engine. Initially, the 840Ci was fitted with BMW&#39;s M60B40 4.0L V8 engine, but in 1995, a the larger M62B44 4.4L V8 engine was used. While featuring the same power rating as the 4.0L unit, the B62B44 featured more torque and a wider powerband. Both engines were available with manual and automatic transmission options that sent power to the rear wheels. Production of the BMW 840Ci ended in 1999, with a total of 7,803 examples built.

Introduced for the 1991 model year, the 850i was powered by BMW&#39;s M70B50 engine. This 5.0L V12 engine generated 296hp, sent to the rear wheels through a six speed manual or four speed automatic transmission. Production of the 850i lasted until 1994, with a total of 20,072 examples built.

The 850Ci was largely similar to the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/e31/850i/">850i</a>, the variant it was meant to replace, but production overlapped for the majority of 1994. BMW introduced the &#39;C&#39; designation in 850Ci as the company was regularly featuring the letter in its coupe variants. The 850Ci featured BMW&#39;s M73B54 5.4L V12 engine, mated to both manual and automatic transmission options. Production of the BMW 850Ci lasted until 1999, with a total of 1,218 examples built.

BMW 850CSi - E31

The BMW 850CSi was the top of the range model for the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/8-series/e31/">first generation 8 Series</a>. Introduced for the 1993 model year, the 850CSi was built by BMW Motorsport and featured an M-tuned V12 engine. This engine was based on the famous BMW M70 V12 engine, yet tuned to such an extent that the engine received its own name, the S70. This 5.6L V12 engine produced a power output of 375hp and 406&nbsp;lbf&sdot;ft of torque. While not named as an M-model, the 850CSi is considered to be an M-model as it was built by the motorsport division. Just 1,510 examples of the BMW 850CSi were built before the end of production in 1996.
