Following an introduction at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 991 was received a mid-cycle facelift for the 2017 model year. The updated Porsche 911 (at Porsche internally referred to as 991.2 or 991 II) introduced new styling including updated front and rear bumpers, new dual exhaust pipes along with new head and tail lights and options, along with all new, 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engines across the range. This was the first time the standard Carrera models had adopted turbocharged engines rather than naturally aspirated ones. The 991 was followed by the 992 series.

In October 2017, Porsche announced the 911 Carrera T (Touring), offering the base Carrera drivetrain but with shorter rear axle ratio, mechanical differential lock, PASM Sport lowered suspension, Sport Chrono package and sports exhaust as standard. Additional features include a reduced sound insulation, light-weight glass side/rear windows, Sport-Tex seats, a shortened shift lever, deletion of the rear seats and communication system (with their re-addition available as a no-cost option), Carrera S wheels, as well as optional rear-wheel steering, PDK transmission and bucket seats.

The Porsche 911 Speedster was a special, limited edition variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/991/9912/">991.2 Porsche 911</a>. Originally unveiled in 2018 as a concept car, the Speedster entered production in 2019. Based on the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/991/9912/gt3/">991.2 GT3</a>, the Speedster was an open top sports car featuring a folding cloth top and a distinctive double bubble roof cover. Power was sourced from the same 4.0L flat six engine as featured in the GT3, but featuring a raft of improvements, including the fuel injection system, individual throttle bodies, and an upgraded exhaust. This naturally aspirated powerplant generated 503hp, which it sent through a 6 speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. In order to stop all this power, Porsche equipped the Speedster with carbon-ceramic brakes as standard. As well as a wide range of color options, a Heritage Design Package was offered that featured race inspired graphics. Production of the 991.2 Porsche 911 Speedster was limited to the 2019 model year, with a total of 1,948 examples built. The 1,948 production number is a reference to the first <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/356/">Porsche 356</a>, which was introduced in 1948.
