Porsche was established in 1931 as an automotive developer and consultant. Founded by the famous Ferdinand Porsche, the company was responsible for the creation of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/volkswagen/beetle/type-1/">Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle</a>. After WW2, the company finally began producing its own automobiles, starting with the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/356/">Porsche 356</a> in 1948. Since the creation of the 356, Porsche has always had a focus on producing sporty, high performance cars. In 1965, the company introduced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/">Porsche 911</a>, a car that has gone on to become synonymous with sports cars, and cemented the company&#39;s place among the most respected in the motoring world. Aside from famous models such as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/carrera-gt/">Carrera GT</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/918-spyder/">918 Spyder</a>, Porsche also has a storied history in motorsport, winning championships and titles in a wide range of competitions. Porsche 997 is the internal designation for the Porsche 911 sold between model year 2005&nbsp;and 2012. Starting with the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera/">997 Carrera</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera-s/">Carrera S</a> coup&eacute;s, they were followed by the all-wheel drive <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera-4/">997 Carrera 4</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera-4s/">Carrera 4S</a> for model year 2006. The <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/turbo/">997 Turbo</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/gt3/">997 GT3</a> derivatives went on sale for the 2007 model year&nbsp;and the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/gt2/">997 GT2</a> for&nbsp;2008. In addition to the coup&eacute; and cabriolet versions, a <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/targa/">997 Targa</a> version of the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S was&nbsp;also available. The 997 was an evolution of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/996/">996 generation</a>, with the most significant changes being interior and exterior styling, the most notable being the replacement of the &quot;fried egg&quot; headlamps used on the 996 with the classic &quot;bug eye&quot; units. The 997&#39;s were available over two distinct periods commonly referred to as 997.1 and 997.2.&nbsp; Over 136,000 of the 997.1 were sold, with another 76,000 and change of the 997.2 models. The first iteration of the model, the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera-4s/9971-carrera-4s/">997.1 Carrera 4S</a> used a 3.8-liter engine producing 355hp &ndash; the available X51 Powerkit bumped that number to 376hp. From 2009 onwards,&nbsp;the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera-4s/9972-carrera-4s/">997.2 Carrera 4S</a> offered 380 hp from 3.8 liters. Approximately 24,200 coupes and 20,300 cabriolets were produced, split 60/40 between the 997.1 and 997.2 generations. It retained the 3.8 liter engine, but this time producing 380 hp as opposed to the 355 hp from its predecessor. Approximately 9,188 coupes and 7,775 cabriolets were built, for a total production of 16,963, sold during model years 2009 to 2012.
