Porsche 997 is the internal designation for the Porsche 911 sold between model year 2005&nbsp;and 2012. Starting with the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera/">997 Carrera</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera-s/">Carrera S</a> coup&eacute;s, they were followed by the all-wheel drive <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera-4/">997 Carrera 4</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera-4s/">Carrera 4S</a> for model year 2006. The <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/turbo/">997 Turbo</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/gt3/">997 GT3</a> derivatives went on sale for the 2007 model year&nbsp;and the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/gt2/">997 GT2</a> for&nbsp;2008. In addition to the coup&eacute; and cabriolet versions, a <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/targa/">997 Targa</a> version of the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S was&nbsp;also available. The 997 was an evolution of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/996/">996 generation</a>, with the most significant changes being interior and exterior styling, the most notable being the replacement of the &quot;fried egg&quot; headlamps used on the 996 with the classic &quot;bug eye&quot; units. The 997&#39;s were available over two distinct periods commonly referred to as 997.1 and 997.2.&nbsp; Over 136,000 of the 997.1 were sold, with another 76,000 and change of the 997.2 models. The 997 Carrera 4S was the first step up in performance over the base <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera-4/">997 Carrera 4</a>. The first iteration of the model, the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/997/carrera-4s/9971-carrera-4s/">997.1 Carrera 4S</a> used a 3.8-liter engine producing 355hp &ndash; the available X51 Powerkit bumped that number to 376hp.
