The Porsche 911E was introduced for the 1969 model year. The E designation stood for Einspritzung, German for &ldquo;injection,&rdquo; noting the Bosch mechanical fuel injection system. From a marketing standpoint, the 911E was designed to be the most comfortable of the 911 models, conceived to fit between the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/t/">911T</a> and the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/">911S</a> models. During its production years, it would be upgraded from the 2.0 liter engine, to the 2.2, followed by the 2.4 to end production in 1973.

The Porsche 911E continued&nbsp;as the&nbsp;midrange 911 model for 1972 and 1973,&nbsp;fitting between the contemporaneous&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/t/24/">2.4L 911T</a> and the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/24/">2.4L 911S</a>. As with the T and S&nbsp;variants, Porsche would upgrade the 911E to a new, larger 2,341 cc (2.3 L) engine, commonly known as the &quot;2.4 L&quot; engines. The 911E version, designated 911/52&nbsp;was rated at 165 hp (it was designated 911/62 with Sportomatic). With the power and torque increase, the 2.4-liter cars also got the newer and stronger transmission, identified as the 915 gearbox. The letter E stood for einspritzung, or injection in German, signifying the presence of its mechanical fuel injection (MFI). It was produced as&nbsp;both a <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/e/24/coupe/">2.4L 911E Coupe</a> and a <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/e/24/targa/">2.4L 911E Targa</a>.
