Porsche was established in 1931 as an automotive developer and consultant. After WW2, the company finally began producing its own automobiles, starting with the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/356/">Porsche 356</a> in 1948. Since the creation of the 356, Porsche has always had a focus on producing sporty, high performance cars. In 1965, the company introduced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/">Porsche 911</a>, a car that has gone on to become synonymous with sports cars, and cemented the company&#39;s place among the most respected in the motoring world. When Porsche introduced the 911, no one could have imagined the impact the model would have on the automotive world. The rear engined sports car has seen numerous generations and variants, each with distinct engine and drivetrain configurations. In production since 1965, the 911 has become synonymous not just with Porsche, but sports cars in general. The 911&#39;s design has evolved over the years, yet the general styling of the car has remained unchanged, with its trademark teardrop shape noticeable through all variants. With a production run of over 50 years, the 911 counts some of the motoring world&#39;s most well known models amongst its history. In late 1966 Porsche introduced a more powerful variant of the 911 called the 911S (S = Super).&nbsp;During it&#39;s production years&nbsp;it received several upgrades, most notably in the form of larger engine displacement. First launched with a <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/20/">2.0 Liter engine</a>, it evolved for <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/20-1969/">1969 with a longer wheelbase</a>,&nbsp;followed by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/22/">2.2L for model year 1970</a>, a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/24/">2.4L in&nbsp;1972</a>, and finally a <a href="http://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/27/">2.7 Liter engine for model year&nbsp;1974</a>. The 1973 2.4L variant&nbsp;represented the final iteration of the model with non-impact bumpers. Note that many of the samples in these markets have undergone engine modifications. The Porsche 911S continued into its second year in production&nbsp;powered by&nbsp;the same engine as its predecessor, Type 901/02, but this time Type 901/08 with Sportomatic (a semi-automatic transmission)&nbsp;became available as well.&nbsp;As with the prior year, the engine featured&nbsp;Weber carburetors and&nbsp;was rated at 160 hp. It was the top of the line offering from Porsche in Europe, above&nbsp;the new entry level <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/t/20/">1968 911T</a> and the midtier <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/l/">1968 911L</a>. Worth noting that in North America, the 911L was considered the top offering for the year, due to emissions restrictions preventing the sale of the 911S in that market. The 1968 911S was available as either a&nbsp;911S Coupe&nbsp;or&nbsp;911S Targa&nbsp;with a &#39;soft&#39; plastic rear window. Total production was 1,709 samples, of which 1,267 were coupes and 442 were Targas. As with the other 911 variants, the 1968 model year is noteworthy as the last year of the short wheelbase (SWB) 911 chassis. It was replaced by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/20-1969/">1969&nbsp;911S</a>.&nbsp;

The 911S featured&nbsp;engine Type 901/02 with Weber carburetors.&nbsp;The model was available as either a <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/20/coupe/">911S Coupe</a> or <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/20/targa/">911S Targa</a>&nbsp;with a &#39;soft&#39; plastic rear window. Total production numbers are spotty, but they are estimated at 2,306, of which 1,823 were Coupe and 483 were Targa. The Porsche 911S continued for the 1969 model year as the top of the line model for the 911,&nbsp;sitting above&nbsp;the contemporaneous&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/t/20-1969/">1969 911T</a>&nbsp;and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/e/20/">1969 911E</a>.&nbsp;As with the other variants, 1969 models were the first to take on a longer wheelbase chassis at 89.4 inches&nbsp;(increased by&nbsp;2.4 inches) which greatly improved drivability, along with flared wheelwells to accommodate larger tires.&nbsp;The 1969 911S&nbsp;was powered by engine Type 901/10&nbsp;featuring mechanical fuel injection (MFI), and was rated at 170 hp. It was available as a 911S&nbsp;Coupe or 911S&nbsp;Targa. After a total production of 2,106 samples (1,492&nbsp;Coupes, 614&nbsp;Targa), it was replaced by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/22/">2.2L 911S</a>&nbsp;for model year 1970.&nbsp;

The Porsche&nbsp;911S continued in model year 1974, now as the midrange model, with&nbsp;the introduction of the 2.7 liter engine. As with&nbsp;a new&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/74-77-base-model/">2.7 liter 911 base model</a> and the high performance&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/carrera-27/">Carrera 2.7</a>, the 911S featured&nbsp;new impact bumpers to conform with US regulations, making these cars significantly different than its predecessors. For the 1974&nbsp;model year, the 911S for all markets was powered by engine&nbsp;Type 911/93 with K-Jetronic fuel injection,&nbsp;rated at 175 hp. Model year 1975 was the last for the 911S in&nbsp;the rest of the world (ROW), where it&nbsp;featured engine&nbsp;Type 911/42 and preserved its rating at 175 hp. For model year 1975 and&nbsp;1976, US-spec cars, destined for California, received engine&nbsp;Type 911/44 and Type 911/84 respectively, which had a power rating&nbsp;of&nbsp;160 hp. For all other States, the engines were&nbsp;Type 911/43 and Type 911/82&nbsp;rated at 165 hp. For model year 1977, the last year of production, the 911S received engine&nbsp;Type 911/85 in all States,&nbsp;rated at 165 hp.
