The rear engined sports car has seen numerous generations and variants, each with distinct engine and drivetrain configurations. In production since 1965, the 911 has become synonymous not just with Porsche, but sports cars in general. In late 1966 Porsche introduced a more powerful variant of the 911 called the 911S (S = Super).&nbsp;During it&#39;s production years&nbsp;it received several upgrades, most notably in the form of larger engine displacement. First launched with a <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/20/">2.0 Liter engine</a>, it evolved for <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/20-1969/">1969 with a longer wheelbase</a>,&nbsp;followed by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/22/">2.2L for model year 1970</a>, a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/24/">2.4L in&nbsp;1972</a>, and finally a <a href="http://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/27/">2.7 Liter engine for model year&nbsp;1974</a>. The 1973 2.4L variant&nbsp;represented the final iteration of the model with non-impact bumpers. Note that many of the samples in these markets have undergone engine modifications. The 911S was phased out with the introduction of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/sc/">Porsche 911 SC</a> for model year 1978.&nbsp;

The Porsche 911S&nbsp;continued as the top of the line&nbsp;911 for the&nbsp;1970&nbsp;and 1971 model years, sitting above&nbsp;the contemporaneous&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/t/22/">2.2L 911T</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/e/22/">2.2L 911E</a>. As with the T and E&nbsp;variants, Porsche would upgrade the 911S&nbsp;to a&nbsp;larger 2.2&nbsp;liter engine. The version in the 911S, Type 911/02,&nbsp;featured mechanical fuel injection, and was rated at&nbsp;180&nbsp;hp.&nbsp;During its production years it&nbsp;was available as a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/22/coupe/">2.2L 911S Coupe</a>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/22/targa/">2.2L 911S Targa</a>. Vehicles from this period with significant modifications will be found in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/porsche/911/s/22/custom/">911S&nbsp;custom (1970 to 1971)</a>&nbsp;market.
