The Renault Fuego was a series of cars that was introduced for the 1981 model year. The Fuego, which means Fire in Spanish, was Renault's entry into the hot 80’s market of sport hatchbacks. What makes the Fuego significant is it was one of the first mass produced 4 seaters to be designed using a wind tunnel, and in 1982 held the record for the fastest diesel car in the world with a top speed of 110 mph. The Fuego was also innovative leader, noted as the first car with keyless entry, and audio controls incorporated into the steering wheel. The Fuego was a great success early on, with different engine options and trim packages catering to each customer’s demands. As customers preferences changed towards the late 80’s, the market shifted away from this segment. Renault also was having financial issues, so a replacement for the Fuego was shelved. European production of the Fuego lasted until 1986, while production in South America continued until 1992.
