BMW introduced their 524td variant of the E28 5 Series for the 1984 model year. The 524td was powered by BMW's M21D24 diesel engine. This 2.4L inline six turbodiesel engine generated 114hp, and was mated to both manual and automatic transmission options. The 524td was only available as a four door sedan, and was in production until 1988. The 524td would be reborn as part of the next generation BMW E34 5 Series.
