The Automatic, Sedan version of the E39 BMW 540i debuted for the 1997 model year. These V8 powered sedans featured BMW's M62B44 engine. This 4.4L V8 powerplant generated 282hp, sending power to the rear wheels through a 5 speed automatic transmission. For the 1999 model year, this engine was updated. Now known as the M62TUB44, this updated engine featured a wider and lower powerband than its predecessor. Production of the Automatic-equipped E39 BMW 540i Sedan lasted until 2003, but the 540i model series would continue life as part of the next generation E60 BMW 5 Series.
