The 728i was a variant of the E23 BMW 7 Series that was introduced for the 1980 model year. These sedans were not offered for the North American or Japanese markets, and were powered by BMW's M30B28 engine. This 2.8L fuel-injected, inline six engine generated 181hp which was sent to the rear wheels via automatic or manual transmission options. The E23 728i was built until 1986, when the model series was put on hiatus. For the 1996 model year, BMW would reintroduce the 728i for E38 7 Series, as the E38 728i.
