The third generation of BMW 7 Series was introduced for the 1995 model year. Known as the E38, these new 7 Series cars were available in short or long configuration as well as with a variety of inline 6, V8 and V12 engines. The E38 was the first 7 Series to offer diesel engines, with inline 6 and V8 options. The variants for the E38 were the 725tds, 728i, 730i, 735i, 740i, 730d and the V12 powered 750i and Alpina B12. Long wheelbase variants such as the 735iL, 740iL and 750iL were also offered, including the extra-long wheelbase L7. Built until 2001, the E38 was replaced by the fourth generation BMW E65 7 Series for the 2002 model year.
