The first Nova SS was a performance variant that debuted in 1963 as part of the First Gen Nova /Chevy II. Chevrolet had introduced the Nova as an economy line in 1962, and the light weight 2500lb body was an early favorite with hot-rodders. Part of this popularity was due to an over the counter kit for dealers to swap in the 283ci V8 small block for the stock 4 or 6 cylinder. 1963 brought the Super Sport option to the Nova 400 model, which included an exterior trim package, Nova SS badging, and bucket seats. 1963 was the only year you could get a convertible Nova SS. By 1964 Chevrolet understood the demand and opportunity and the SS now had the vindicated option of a 283ci V8, with the 195hp L32 version or the 220hp L77. A Muncie 4 speed manual was optional to back up the new muscle. 1965 Chevrolet went one better and offered the legendary 327ci L30 (250hp) or the L74 (300hp). 1965 was the only year you could get the Powerglide 2 speed automatic behind the 327. The combination of a light unibody and V8 power would become a recipe for success for Chevrolet for years to come and the SS would continue as part of the Second Generation Nova.
