The C3 Corvette was introduced in 1968 and in order to keep Corvette as the king, Chevrolet continued to offer the 427ci 'L89' V8 powerplant. While the new C3 body style would be an eye catcher, it would ultimately be the L89 engine that would keep Corvette at the top of the horsepower mountain. In 1967 the C2 Corvette introduced the 427 cubic inch V8, and along with it came the (L71) Tri-Power option which included an aluminum intake with (3) 2v Holley carburetors, tuned with a solid cam shaft that produced an under-estimated 435hp. Chevrolet then upped the ante with the introduction of aluminum heads to that already potent package. This resulted in 70 pounds off the front end. This little-known performance version designated as the L89, came in 624 Corvettes in 1968, and 390 units in 1969.
