The fourth generation of Chevrolet Malibu saw the model become an independent model. Prior to the 1978 model year, the Malibu name had been used to designate trim levels on the Chevrolet Chevelle, this is why the first generation of the Malibu as a stand alone model is still the 4th Gen. The fourth generation saw the model downsize, not only in terms of size, but of weight as well. This updated generation was offered in sedan, coupe, or station wagon body styles, and was available with a selection of V6 and V8 engines. Production of the fourth generation lasted until 1983, when the Malibu was discontinued.
