The third generation of Chevrolet Monte Carlo debuted for the 1978 model year. The third generation Monte Carlo saw the model downsize substantially from its predecessor. Comparatively, this new generation was almost 800 lbs lighter, and 15" shorter than the Second Generation Monte Carlo. The model was still offered as a rear wheel drive two door coupe, but a range of V6 engines were added as options alongside the V8 units due to the oil crisis at the time. Production of the third generation was short lived, with the Fourth Generation Chevrolet Monte Carlo replacing it for the 1981 model year.
