The first generation of the Chrysler 300 Non-Letter Series was introduced for the 1962 model year. The 300 Non-Letter Series was created as a lower cost alternative to the Chrysler 300 Letter Series, and was offered as a two or four door hardtop, or two door convertible. The 1963 Chrysler 300J Convertible was offered as part of the 1st Gen 300 Non-Letter series in a bid to increase sales. It was also used as the Pace Car for the 1963 Indy 500. The first generation 300 Non-Letter Series came standard with a 6.3L V8 engine, and also featured the 6.8L 'Wedge' V8 available for the Letter Series as an option. Production of the first generation 300 Non-Letter Series lasted until 1964, when the Second Generation Chrysler 300 Non-Letter Series was unveiled.
