Chrysler introduced the New Yorker for the 1940 model year. Previously, the New Yorker name had been used on a Chrysler Imperial variant, but in 1940, it became an independent model. The first generation New Yorker was offered in three body styles, two or four door sedan, coupe, and convertible. The most notable trim level was the Highlander package, which included an array of options as well as Tartan cloth featured throughout the interior. The first generation New Yorker was powered by a 5.3L inline eight engine and was produced until 1942 when commercial production halted due to WW2. In 1946, after WW2, Chrysler would introduce the Second Generation New Yorker.
