Needing series production to stabilize his company's finances, Enzo Ferrari asked Pinin Farina to design a simple and classic Ferrari 250 GT Coupé. Initially, bodywork was subcontracted to Carrozzeria Boana (later Carrozzeria Ellena) resulting in the 250 GT Coupé Boano/Ellena. By 1958 Pinin Farina's Grugliasco plant expanded and now had the capacity to produce the new 250 GT Coupé Pinin Farina. 335 near-identical examples were built by 1960, although a number of important developments occurred during production resulting in Series I and Series II cars. Notably, four wheel disc brakes were introduced in late 1959 along with several mechanical improvements. A 250 GT Pinin Farina Cabriolet was also built.
