The Ferrari Dino 246 GT was the model that followed in the footsteps of the Dino 206 GT and began manufacture in 1969. The 246 was a variant of the 206 and featured new additions. The transversely mid-mounted V6 was updated to a larger 2.4L. Optional features offered were wheel arch flares and seats from the 365 Daytona; the option was commonly referred to as the "chairs and flares" package. In addition to the GT or coupe, customers could also order a GTS, which was a spider, partial open top. Steel was used for the majority of the bodies to cut costs, and manufacturing numbers were far higher than those of the 206 GT, coming in at over 2,295. The 246 GT halted production in 1974 and was succeeded by the Dino 308 GT4 introduced in 1973.
