Ford introduced the second generation of Mustang for the 1974 model year. The second generation Mustang, also known as the Mustang II, saw the model decrease in size, as late first generation Mustangs had become large cars, no longer representing the small, agile cars originally launched. The Mustang II was based on the Ford Pinto, and was only available as a coupe or 2+2 liftback, with a choice of inline four (2.3L), V6 (2.8L), or V8 (4.9L) engines. While not reaching the same sales levels as the first generation, the Mustang II still sold well, and was produced until 1978. The second generation was replaced by the Third Generation Ford Mustang.
