The 1987 to 1993 Ford Mustang Special Service Package "SSP," was based on the Third Generation Mustang Fox Body as a performance edition for police use in the USA. Police agencies favored the Mustang as a performance alternative to standard cruisers as lightweight and rugged duty vehicles. Exterior treatments and liveries varied per police agency, and all featured reinforced floor pans. The interior was stripped-down and featured a certified calibrated speedometer, among other agency-specific modifications. A 5.0L fuel-injected V8 featured more robust components over pedestrian versions, including a more powerful alternator and an external oil cooler. Most were produced as automatics that sent power to the rear wheels. After 15k SSP were produced, Ford did not continue the program to the SN-95 platform.
