In 2005 the fifth generation Mustang GT, or S-197 GT was born. Ford kept a similar formula of "pony car" as its predecessor with a front engine 4.6L V8 and power to the rear wheels only. The car was offered in two-door coupe and convertible body styles with automatic or manual transmission options. Apart from a number of trim differences captured in the Standard Variants market, some notable offshoots of the S-197 GT include the Twister Special, California Special, and the Iacocca 45th Anniversary Edition. Others variants treated as separate models, but still based on the GT of the era, are the Bullitt and Shelby versions. Modified GTs of this era were available from tuners including Roush and Saleen. The SN-197 Mustang GT evolved into the S-197 II Mustang GT for the 2010 model year.
