The third generation of Lotus Esprit was introduced in 1981. Known as the Series 3, the third gen Esprit saw updated bodywork, but largely retained the original Giugiaro design. The S3 was powered by a mid mounted 2.2L inline four engine. The introduction of the Esprit Turbo saw the first turbocharged variant of the Esprit. The Series 3 Esprit was in production until 1987 and was replaced by the Lotus Esprit X180.
