First built in 1936, the Maserati 6CM was the successor to the smaller 4CM. Although built on the 4CM chassis, it had a more advanced independent front suspension. These cars were made for the smaller "voiturette" racing class and had a 1.5L six-cylinder supercharged motor. The 6CM has a prominent place in racing history as it competed against the juggernaut Mercedes team of the pre-war era. Renowned racers such as Count Trossi and Luigi Villoresi both spent time in the driver seat. Only 27 examples were built and the car's production ended in 1940.
