As an evolution of the earlier Special Edition, Black Miata, and Limited Edition variants, Mazda would introduce the MX-5 Miata M-Edition for the 1994 through the 1997 model years. For each model year, there were subtle tweaks to the feature set along with minor mechanical differences. In addition to the more powerful 1,839 cc engine adopted for the entire range, the 1994 M-Edition was painted Montego Blue Mica, and featured a Torsen limited-slip differential and special M-Edition badges. For the 1995 model year, it was painted in Merlot Mica (Burgundy), and featured adjustable headrests and 15-inch BBS wheels. The 1996 version was painted Starlight Blue Mica and switched to Enkei wheels. For the 1997 model year, the final year of the NA generation Miata, it was painted Marina Green Mica. Approximately 3,000 units were produced for each model year, although exact number vary by source. The practice of Special / Limited Edition variants would continue in the NB generation MX5-Miata.
