During the NB generation, Mazda would introduce the MX-5 Miata Special Edition for the 2000 through 2003 model years. For each model year specific colors were offered: Mohagony Mica in model year 2000, British Racing Green for 2001, Titaninum Gray and Blazing Yellow for 2002, and Strato Blue for model year 2003. The Special Edition variants were offered with the same engine found in the NB Miata base model, the 1.8 liter DOHC inline-four, rated a 140 hp (142 hp as of 2001), driving the rear wheels through manual or an optional automatic transmission.
