The 2002 Mazda RX-7 Spirit R is a final year production variant for the FD Generation of RX-7, sold alongside the Type R Bathurst during the year. It was powered by an uprated version of Mazda's 13B-REW twin-turbo 1.3L rotary engine, rated at 276hp, driving power to the rear via a 5-speed manual or optional automatic. The Spirit R was available in three trim levels: the Type A, a two-seater with a 5-speed manual transmission; the Type-B, a four-seater with a 5-speed manual transmission; and the Type-C, a four-seater with a 4-speed automatic transmission. All three trim levels were equipped with common interior and exterior features, such as BBS 17" wheels, red brake calipers, and interior panels with a special soft coating. Both the Type-A and Type-B featured additional performance features such as cross drilled disc brakes, stainless steel brake hoses, and Bilstein shocks. But the most distinctive feature was exclusive to the Type-A in the form of Recaro racing seats trimmed in red cloth. As a result, the Spirit R Type-A has become the holy grail for the RX-7 collector and enthusiast.
