The W108 and W109 were a series of luxury cars built between 1965 and 1972 (1973 for North America). The W108 and W109 were produced as 4 door sedans available in two wheelbase lengths, originally with the W108 representing the standard wheelbase, while the W109 represented the long wheelbase. For the 1968 model year, this distinction ended as the 280SEL was built on the W108 platform. The W109 became exclusive to 3.0L (300) variants, with its greatest distinction being its self-levelling air suspension and greater luxury. Over the course of production, these cars were offered with various displacement inline 6 or V8 engines. Variants included the 250S, 250SE, 280S, 280SE, 300SE, 280SE 3.5, 280SE 4.5, 280SEL, 280SEL 3.5, 280SEL 4.5, 300SEL, 300SEL 3.5, 300SEL 4.5, and the powerful 300 SEL 6.3. The W108 and W109 were replaced by the W116 S-Class.
