Mercedes-Benz introduced the W111 Sedan for the 1960 model year. Initially, only Mercedes' M127 inline 6 engine was available in a variety of trim levels (220, 220S, 220SE). In 1965, Mercedes introduced the 230S, which used the new larger M180 inline 6 engine. It is common to see 'b' after early W111 cars, this is to differentiate the models from the pervious 220 'Ponton' series of Mercedes'. Built until 1968, the W111 would give way to the W108/109.
