The Mercedes-Benz W140 was introduced for the 1992 model year. The new S-Class continued the sedan's tradition of technological innovation and engineering excellence. The W140 was available with either an inline 6, a V8, or a V12 engine, as well as long or short wheelbase configurations. As Mercedes changed their name convention in 1993, the W140 S-Class features variants that were built under two different names, but were the same respective car. These variants include the S280, 300SD, 300SE, 400SE, 500SE, 600SE, 400SEL, 500SEL, 600SEL, S350 Turbodiesel, S320 / S320 Long, S420 / S420 Long, S500 / S500 Long and S600 / S600 Long. Production of the W140 S-Class Sedan lasted until late 1998, with models sold in the United States until 1999.
