The first generation Mercury Comet was introduced in 1960. The Comet was initially sold without a make, only becoming badged as a Mercury in 1963. The first generation Comet was available as a coupe, sedan, or station wagon, and was offered with a choice of two inline six engines (2.4L, 2.8L) and one V8 option (4.3L). The Comet was offered with Standard and "Custom" trim levels, and also featured the S-22 package, which was sold as a sport variant, but featured no mechanical changes, only badging and interior changes. Production of the first generation Comet lasted until 1963, when it was replaced by the Second Generation Mercury Comet.
