The third generation of Mercury Comet was introduced for the 1965 model year. The third generation Comet saw the model move from the compact category to the mid-size category, and was built on the chassis used for the Ford Fairline. The third generation Comet was offered as a convertible, sedan, station wagon, and coupe. Certain trim levels were renamed, with the Compet Capri replacing the 404 and the Comet Voyager name used for the standard station wagon, where the Comet Villager name was used for the wood panel sided station wagon. The Capri, Cyclone, and Caliente variants remained. All third generation Comets were fitted with a 6.4L (390 cu in) V8 engine, offered in various states of tune. Production of the third generation Comet ended in 1967, and was replaced by the Fourth Generation Mercury Comet.
